Bloomsburys is committed to promoting market leading best practice in commitment to the environment and sustainability.
We recognise the importance of protecting our environment, supporting our communities, and providing exceptional experiences for our guests while minimising our ecological footprint. Our sustainability initiatives focus on the following key areas:
1. Environmental Stewardship
- Energy Management: LED Bulbs used throughout the entire site. Motion sensors in public areas. Time management on heating. Time monitored screen saving. Training for staff on the best practices.
- Water Conservation: Press button taps in public areas. High-speed, high-pressure machine washers for minimal water consumption. Training for staff on best practices.
- Waste Reduction: Aim for zero waste through strict use of DMR recycling bins, Glass, Food bins, composting, and minimising of single-use plastics. We pledge a Zero waste to landfill and all general waste is taken for incineration.
2. Community Engagement
- Local Partnerships: Collaborate with local businesses and artisans to source food, products, and services, promoting economic growth within the community. These include: All on site businesses, as well as Plaxtol Bakery, Wilkes Butchers, Hinxden Dairy, Kent Coffee & many more.
- Cultural Preservation: Engage with local communities and assist the parish in local events. Maintain our premises to the award winning standard the public expects.
3. Sustainable Operations
- Staff Training: Provide ongoing training for staff on sustainability practices and their role in supporting the company’s environmental goals.
- Sourcing Practices: Prioritise suppliers who adhere to sustainable practices in their operations, including responsible sourcing of food, materials, and services.
- On Site Vegetation: Grow our own herbs and vegetables which are used within our menus daily.
- Wildlife: We have sixteen raised beds in the healing Garden. These attract and promotes the reproduction of Larvae & Butterflies. We are committed to ensuring large areas of the retreat site are left un-mowed and uncultivated to encourage wild flora and fauna.
- Electric Cars: We and other business tenants use electric cars, helping to reduce emissions during commuting and of course in personal journeys.
- Refillable toiletries: We provide guests with premium bathroom toiletries in refillable containers. This reduces our hygiene product plastic waste by over 95%.
- Reusable Glass Bottled Water: We have committed to no longer purchsing large plastic bottled water. Instead, we have replaced these with reusable glass bottles. We filter our water on site and reuse all over our glass bottles. This reducing our plastic waste by 730kg each year.
- Solar: Bloomsburys benefits from a 50kw solar array backed up by 15kw of Tesla power wall batteries. powered by solar. This neatly reduces our carbon footprint whilst maintaining hot water throughout Bloomsburys.
- Smart Plugs: 70% of our appliances are linked to smart plug technology. This allows us to control our dormant appliances 24 hours a day, all year round, from anywhere in the world.
- Sustainability in Laundry: We allow guests to decline the option of fresh towels on shorter stays where they are not needed. This reduces our laundry load by up to 40%, in turn, allowing a reduction in our carbon footprint.
- EV Charging Ports: Available to guests and colleagues, making the ease of charging an electric vehicle possible, encouraging guests to adapt to this more economical mode of transportation.
4. Guest Engagement and Education
- Awareness: Our policies are available in house or online. Our staff are trained to acknowledge and educate guests on our commitment to a greener, more environmentally friendly workplace.
5. Monitoring and Reporting
- Monitoring: We regularly monitor our energy consumption, waste tonnage and economical operations to ensure we are always diversifying where physically and reasonably possible.
- Annual Reporting: The results of our commitment to being environmentally friendly are shared annually with our board of directors, management and team members. Results of our previous year are available upon request.

Recycling and waste disposal policy for residents.
At Bloomsburys we feel very passionately about how we deal with the waste that we all create.
We believe you all feel the same way, and so we are sure that you will embrace this policy as a guest or tenant of Bloomsburys.
There are Four large, lidded waste bins at the front of the site: Dry Mixed recycling (DMR), General waste, Glass and food waste
DMR: Please ensure your mixed recycling only contains the following:
Cardboard, paper, metal tins, containers and hard recyclable plastic from packaging. This must be dry and made as clean as possible.
GENERAL: All non recyclable waste that is not glass or food waste.
GLASS: Any bottles and glass products without caps or metal components.
FOOD: All cooked and uncooked food products.
Your waste is emptied weekly. Please make sure you put the correct waste in these bins and flatten any containers and cardboard before putting it into the bins.
This will help to ensure that the bins are sufficient for our collective needs. Any coffee grounds, fruit and vegetable peelings can be put in the compost area at the rear of the site. However if you are unsure of whether your food is compostable, just place it into the food waste bin at the front of the site in order not to risk encouraging rodents.
As we are not connnected to mains drainage, our aerobic system relies on microbial digestion that is easily blocked and affected by fats and chemicals. Therefore, please only put toilet paper down the toilet and please do not pour any fats down the sink. Please try to use natural cleaning products where possible and bleach minimally. Sanitary products must be put in white bags and disposed of with general waste. Oils and fats can be wiped and put into general waste and larger volumes can be poured into the gravel on our western boundary. This will all help to minimise our footprint and help the environment.
Thanks for your co operation – together we can really make a difference!
